 August 2011
The fishing should be outstanding in August. Weather and water temperatures are consistently very warm which makes the fish lethargic during the midday. Fishing early in the morning or late afternoon/early evening using the incoming tide turns the bite on and is your best bet.
I’ll be using the top of the incoming tide to catch a variety of fish on the Clearwater flats. Finding an area that has grass with sand holes and moving water will be the ticket. These types of areas generally hold the bait fish, pinfish and white bait, which attracts the larger species such as redfish, trout, mackerel, ladyfish and sharks. Try different flats, some are better than others.
Catch and release snook fishing has been fantastic in June and July and if the weather holds, look for it to continue into August.
Look for snook in the passes of Clearwater, Dunedin, north Honeymoon Island, around Three Rooker Island and Anclote Key Island. Start early in the morning and move along the beaches looking in the swatch channel between the first sand bar and the beach. Cast along the beach with artificials like Top Dog top water lures, MirrOdine or plastic tail jigs such as Cal 3” shad tail in white or new penny.
Redfish will be scattered when the water gets hot. Lots of searching is required if targeting this fish.
Some large trout are in the bays and on the flats in August. Look for good grass flats inside the passes that have moving water. Drift or anchor up once you find a likely area. Artificials and live bait both work well on these gator trout.
Yes, it will be warm in August but once the fish start chewing, the action will be much hotter.
