May, 2011
As April ended, the water temperature is above 80 degrees. That’s normal for this time of year. The bait was infiltrating the bays and the fishing action increased another notch from great to outstanding. Look for May’s catching action in the Clearwater area to continue.
All species are being caught in Clearwater Bay, St. Joseph Sound and all around the surrounding waters. Snook, redfish, trout, mackerel and others are feeding aggressively. This is an indication that the bait has returned in a big way.
What’s biting?
Trout and redfish have been the key targets of my trips in the past month and will be for May. Start out by cast netting some white bait (scaled sardines) over the grass flats inside the passes. You may need some chum (jack mackerel and oats) to lure in the baits around the boat. If after a couple of throws you don’t see any bait, move on to another area.
After securing your baits, set up over some grass flats inside the bay that has some moving water. Toss out a few cut up baits to get the action going. Now cast your baits out in the general area of the chum and give it some time.
Redfish have been scattered throughout the mangroves. It will take some looking and searching to locate them.
A lot of mackerel and lady fish will be mixed in the fishing frenzy. When they show up, get ready for some fast nonstop action. You may lose a few hooks, but its way too much fun to pass up.
All and all, May should be one of the best months to fish in the Clearwater inshore area. Your key to success will be to get out there and throw a line in the water.
