 September 2011 Fishing Forecast
We are still having typical Central Florida summer weather. Day time around 90 degrees and water temperature in Clearwater Bay is in the upper 80’s. The water temps dip 3 to 4 degrees after a nice rain shower, so take advantage of this condition. This could wake the fish up and turn the bite on. The doldrums of summer have not ended. We can only hope for a little relief for us fisherman soon.
Now for the fish, they have not moved too far from their hot weather locations. I am still finding trout along the edges of shallow grass flats of Clearwater Harbor where they are feeding on millions of small fry baits in the bay. It takes good moving water to get these gator trout to bite.
Redfish are still scattered around in different areas of Clearwater and St Joseph Sound and have not come together in big schools yet. My clients have scored on some nice size reds of 30, 31 and 33 inches at different locations throughout the bay. We are catching lots of 16 to 18 inch reds on the incoming tide as well using both shrimp and white bait.
I found some nice snook still hanging out at the beach right up next to the break water. I followed a group of fish a 1/4 mile down the beach, throwing artificials and live bait with no results. It want be long until these fish move inside the passes to the spoil islands and hold until the first cool front.
Using live shrimp for bait this summer has been surprisingly rewarding. Lots of my big fish catches have come from using shrimp including snook. So don’t leave yourself short, it may make your day.
