Wet July 4th fishing report

July 2010

As my customers looked at each other around 9:30 am on a rain soaked flat, Sunday, July 4th, I ask the question. Do you want to duck under a bridge and wait this rain out or wait and take on the challenge another day? The answer was unanimous, fish on. So we zipped up the foul weather gear and took off in search of the targeted species, snook, redfish and trout.

It was a nice steady rain for about 3 hours and we slowly moved from flat to flat around the Clearwater area. Paul and Bob were catching lots of trout at most of the locations. They ended up catching over 20 trout and two of them were around the 20 inch mark.

As the rain continued, the redfish bite turned on. We were set up on the edge of a flat and casting our baits into the deeper water. The guys caught four reds ranging from 25 to 28 inches and for both anglers, it was their first. Also we found several nice ladyfish and jacks mixed in to round off the day. Could not find that snook, but the anglers were very happy.

If you are able or willing to fish in the rain, more times than not, the bite will turn on. It has more to do with the falling pressure as it rains than anything else. So zip it up and keep casting, a little water want hurt.
