As spring break arrives in Clearwater and Dunedin during late March and early April, the fishing action has gone off the charts again. I have been extremely busy with charters and we are catching many fish on every trip.
The water temperature is in the mid-70s and the bait fish have shown up inside the bays. Many different species are feeding throughout the inshore waters and grass flats on the incoming tides. Redfish, trout, mackerel and ladyfish have made their presence known biting on shrimp and white bait.
Here is some of what we are catching in Clearwater Bay and Dunedin.
Greg, Renee and sons, Tommy and Jason, came out and we got into trout and redfish action first thing in the morning. Some drag screaming mackerel were also caught and Tommy and Jason did a great job catching the fish. Both Greg and Renee caught some 20 inch trout and it was Greg that had the catch of the day, an 18 inch, 4 lb. pompano.
Ben and Margaret joined me to test some of the spring fishing action. Both anglers were catching lots of trout, redfish and mackerel. Ben’s biggest trout was 22 inches and Margaret took honors with a nice redfish. They were caught using shrimp under a float.
Tom and grandson Mitchell made a visit on board and proceeded to catching seven different species and some very nice size gator trout. Both fishermen reeled in several dozen trout, a handful of mackerel, some redfish, ladyfish and an assortment of other fish. Mitchell caught a gator trout just over 25 inches and a 24 inch mackerel. Tom added a 22 inch trout to the collection.
Mike and Kyle were in town for a wedding and came out fishing for the day. They scored on many trout and mackerel inside Clearwater Bay. Kyle caught a reel screaming 28 inch mackerel and did a great job bringing it in. Mike added a 20 inch trout and a nice redfish.
This gives you a taste of the spring time fishing action that’s going on right now in Clearwater and Dunedin fishing areas. All indications are pointing to this fishing frenzy to continue through April and further. If there is a time to get out fishing, it would be right now.
